The boats are the headline. Fundamentals here are taught on a 41-foot Catalina 400 MkII and a 44-foot Helia catamaran, boats most schools reserve for their advanced courses, on the theory that learning to dock a 41-footer means you can dock a 41-footer. For a student whose end goal is chartering a cruising boat, the transition problem is solved on day one.
The format is immersion: three full eight-hour days with up to six hours a day under sail on Biscayne Bay, classes capped at four, adults only. Courses are combinable and customizable, running Basic Keelboat (101) through Basic Coastal Cruising (103), Bareboat Cruising (104), and Cruising Catamaran (114) on the Helia.
Captain Russ Beyer runs the school: an ASA-certified instructor and licensed Florida yacht broker with sailing time in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, South Florida, and the Bahamas. Booking runs by phone, and the school sails out of Coconut Grove.
