The founding is worth telling straight: in 1973, thirty-three people pledged $1,392 between them to pick up an option on five acres of Port Charlotte waterfront. Title passed that September, ground broke on September 19, 1974, and the club has been on Lister Street ever since. Most Florida yacht clubs of this vintage were founded by money looking for a harbor; this one was founded by a harbor’s worth of people scraping the money together, and the difference still shows in the culture.
The water is the argument for the location. Charlotte Harbor is one of the largest estuaries in Florida: miles of protected sailing between the Peace and Myakka rivers and the barrier islands, with Boca Grande Pass as the door to the Gulf. The club’s calendar runs the full boating spread across it: racing, regattas, raft-ups, and cruises, the standing rotation of a club where the boats actually leave the dock.
It is a private club, but one that openly invites the public to come look before joining, a small tell that the membership recruits by showing rather than gatekeeping.
