The club started in 1938 in the house of one of Flagler’s bridge tenders on Garrison Bight, a founding premises that tells you what kind of institution this was. The early club ran on card games and provision lockers, a place where working boatmen kept their gear and their society, and the full-service club of today grew out of that rather than being planted on top of it.
The practical offer for a visiting boat is the marina: sixty-eight wet slips in a range of sizes on Garrison Bight, the protected basin on the north side of the island, with dock restrooms and showers, a boat ramp, a dining room, bar, and a ship’s store on the property. A reciprocity program serves members of affiliated clubs. Worth arranging before you arrive in high season, because protected dockage in Key West is never in surplus.
Garrison Bight itself is the reason the club works: it is the calm pocket on an island otherwise surrounded by open water, sheltered from the prevailing southeast breeze and a short run from both the Atlantic and Gulf sides. The club has spent nearly ninety years on the same shore of it.
