Key West Community Sailing Center

The model is simple and rare in the Keys: a 501(c)(3) whose charter is to keep sailing open “for educational, recreational and social use for the public,” on an island where most water access runs through a charter operator’s booking page. Members sail the center’s fleet of small boats out of Palm Avenue; classes, summer camp, and special events are open to the public without membership at all; and the center rents in-water and dry dockage to owners of private small boats, solving the hardest practical problem of sailing in Key West, which is having somewhere to keep the boat.

Racing is woven into the week rather than staged as occasional spectacle. Sunday afternoon races run weekly, the ‘Round the Island Race circles Key West annually, and the Southernmost Youth Regatta each January brings junior fleets to the bottom of the map for what its name promises is the last regatta before Cuba.

The youth program runs classes and camps with scholarships funded by donations, so the kids of a town that lives on the water can actually get out on it. Adults get classes, private lessons, and group sails on the same fleet.
