ECSA was formed in 1992 by a group of sailing fathers who saw the gap, and it has since put thousands of local kids on Choctawhatchee Bay. It is a US Sailing certified Community Sailing Center and a 501(c)(3) that runs program-fee based and open to the public, with youth scholarships so cost is never the reason a kid stays ashore.
The youth machine is the core: eight summer camp sessions (most of 2026 sold out months early), a Little Salts program for the smallest sailors, an Opti race team, learn-to-race and advanced clinics, and the sailing programs for four local high schools, Niceville, Choctaw, Fort Walton Beach, and Rocky Bayou Christian. The fleet spans Optis, Tazes, Lasers, 420s, Open Skiffs, and Flying Scots, plus a learn-to-windsurf track that few Florida community sailing centers can match.
The association operates from Fort Walton Yacht Club on Smack Point, with a second venue at Bluewater Bay in Niceville; it is a program organization rather than a facility, so the docks and dining belong to its host clubs. Adult lessons run by arrangement with the sailing director rather than on a published calendar.
Emerald Coast Sailing Association is open to the public: no member sponsorship required to take part. Class schedules, program fees, and any membership or annual-pass options are posted on its website.
