The Rudder Club of Jacksonville

The Mug Race is the club’s claim on the wider sailing world: the long-running river race comes down the St. Johns from Palatka, and the Rudder Club’s dock at Orange Park is where it ends. Hosting the finish of one of the country’s longest river races is the kind of job that only lands on a club whose members will actually run the committee boats, and that is the character of the place: a sailing club that happens to have a bar, not the reverse.

The rest of the calendar covers the spread. PHRF handicap racing for the keelboats, a summer series, and the Werewolf races, with their evening starts, which on the St. Johns in summer is the only civilized time to race. Youth racing runs in Optis and 420s, with fall youth sailing and a summer camp on the schedule, and adult learn-to-sail starts each season with an open initial meeting: turn up in September, sail by winter.

Joining is straightforward but not instant: application, fee, and board approval at the monthly meeting, second Tuesday. For sailors on the First Coast the alternative clubs are mostly social institutions; this is the one organized around the racing.
